This blog article is a step by step tutorial on the topic makeup for black women. I love a natural looking makeup for most occasions. Other times, which are rare not unless it is for a photoshoot session, I really go all in. I personally taught myself how to do my own makeup and I got really good at it. I went from doing it in 45 minutes to 15 minutes. However, I have to be honest sometimes my left eyebrow acts up a little bit and it takes a bit longer.
Kindly note that – I give information of what I use, this is not an affiliate blog. With that in mind let us get started on how to achieve a natural looking makeup for black women.
Steps to achieve a natural glow makeup for black women
This is the order in which I put on my natural looking make up. You are allowed to switch the order to what is best comfortable for you.
Step 1 Prepare Your Skin
Cleanse and Moisturize: Start with a gentle cleanser to remove impurities, followed by a hydrating moisturizer suited for your skin type. Well-moisturized skin creates a smooth base for makeup.
Prime: Use a primer to even out your skin texture and control oil. A mattifying primer can help if you have oily skin, while a hydrating primer is ideal for dry skin.
Step 2 Eyebrows and eyes
My eyebrows have been tweezed to the shape that works best for me. I use a black eyebrow pencil to fill them in and the go in with my shade compact powder and shape them. You can opt for foundation to shape your eyebrows instead of a compact powder.
Eyeshadow: For a natural look, I use neutral shades like warm browns or deep maroon. You can also opt for caramel, deep golds or bronze. Blend it well and then add eyeliner finish off with mascara to enhance your lashes. You can choose to add length or volume.
Step 3 Foundation and Concealer
Choose the Right Shade: Find a foundation that matches your skin tone perfectly. Test shades on your jawline in natural light to ensure the best match. For a natural look, choose a lightweight, dewy foundation.
Blend Well: Use a damp makeup sponge or a foundation brush to blend the foundation seamlessly into your skin. Start from the center of your face and work outward. I love this brush/sponge as I get two for one.
Conceal: It is advisable to use a concealer one shade lighter than your foundation to brighten under the eyes. However, I use a concealer that is three times lighter than my shade. This gives me a better pop. Blend well for a seamless finish.
Step 4 Contour
Contour: Contouring helps define your face better and adds more depth to it. Use a contour shade which is darker than your skin tone. I only contour my cheekbones and my nose. Blend thoroughly to avoid harsh lines and give a natural look.
Highlight: I only highlight my cheek temple, nose tip and cupid bow. For a more natural look, choose a highlighter with gold or bronze undertones to complement black skin. Apply it to the high points of your face for example, this adds a natural glow.
Step 4 Blush and Contour
Blush: Opt for blush shades like pink, burnt peach, or warm berry to add a healthy flush to your cheeks. Apply to the apples of your cheeks and blend upward toward your temples. I often use a coral pink one as it is not too visible and then add a little shimmering on top.
Contour: I only contour along my nose and jawline.
Step 5 Lips
Nude Lipstick: Choose a nude lipstick that complements your skin tone. Shades like caramel, mocha, or deep berry work well for black skin. I love deep brown color and sometimes I put gloss only. Whenever I put on my lipstick, I highlight my cupid bow with a light brown shimmering eyeshadow palette.
Step 6 Setting spray
Set Your Makeup: Use a setting spray to keep your makeup in place and add a subtle glow. Choose a spray with a dewy finish for an extra touch of radiance. My setting spray contains Vitamin C which is perfect for me.
Tip
Always buy a setting spray that suits your skin type in order to avoid shiny or over dry face.
By following these steps, you can achieve a natural, glowing makeup look that enhances your beauty as a black woman. The key is to choose products that complement your skin tone and blend them well for a seamless, radiant natural finish.
